It’s time to start the listing the date before the month because we’re in Italy now! Man, many thanks to those who participated in making the San Francisco Gala Fundraiser a success! We reached our financial goals and shoved off to Europe feeling supported and inspired. On January 13, Ben and Christopher took Rome by storm and busily prepared the Casa del Popolo as the home and office of the Alpha Team. Betsy arrived on Friday, January 19, with her cat Josie and all are settling in. We’ve tackled the immediate logistical details-- acquiring codici fiscale (official identity numbers), bank accounts, internet service, and more. It is great to be back in Calvi and making real progress. Planning for Art Monastery Fundraising Galas in American cities (Boston, New York, Buffalo, Bloomington, St. Louis, Kansas City, Tucson, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle) begins pronto.

Christopher and Betsy move into Calvi dell'Umbria's Casa del Popolo along with full-time Alpha Team members Ben Baker, Flavia Molea, Julia Pond, and Harald Kerres. The Art Monastery Project has been officially created as an Italian Unincorporated Association (Non-Profit) and the US 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation formed to support the project will be called "Gli Amici dell'Art Monastery" (ie. The Friends of the Art Monastery). We invite you to become a member of Gli Amici, as it will assist in our final contract negotiations with Calvi. To become a member, fill out this simple form. It costs nothing, although we do appreciate any financial donation to facilitate the move to Italy, as during these delicate early phases even the smallest financial donations make a big difference (click the “donate” button above).

The Board of Directors meeting made a unanimous vote to choose Calvi dell’Umbria as the site for the Art Monastery! We met with Mayor Lorenzoni and the council and came to a handshake agreement with significant improvements to the contract. Betsy has returned to San Francisco to push forward the incorporation and 501 (c)3 process, while Christopher remains in Calvi to work out the final details of the contract and architectural drawings. Calvi is more beautiful each time we return and feels more and more like home. Our art exhibition and concert in June seem to have had a big impact. The Mayor told us that if you go into the streets and ask the people what they want, they say “The Art Monastery Project!” The Alpha Team grows and gathers momentum and is most likely to take occupancy of the Casa del Popolo in January 2008, with hopes to move into the convent in April 2008.
Please let us know if you would like to help or know an expert who would.
We welcome your input!

Christopher and Betsy are in Italy right now, continuing to investigate both Calvi and Nepi. The Art Monastery Board of Directors meeting is Thursday, October 11, and aspires to resolve some major questions. We hope to have big news upon our return to San Francisco at the end of October.

We have returned to the U.S. after more than two months in Europe, beginning with our inaugural Board of Director's meeting in Den Haag in May. The Art Monastery Tour (from June 14 to 19, 2007) was well attended and without question a resounding success. Calvi responded to the art exhibition, Duetto, in the town hall of Calvi by Betsy McCall & Sarah Baker, and the packed church concert by Christopher Fuelling's 17thC ensemble, The Pacelli Project, with porchetta and wine for hundreds and a dance band that kept us dancing in the Piazza with the Calvese until the wee hours. We hope it is but the first of many magical evenings in Calvi and we are now finalizing contractual negotiations for a move to Italy in January 2008.

Thanks to all who participated in the tour and have assisted us getting where we are now--
we continue to appreciate your insight and passion!

Images of the June Tour are also accessible via the Calvi Slideshow page.
