June 14-24, 2010— Community Building & Youth Empowerment in Italy through the Arts!

The Art Monastery, in conjunction with The Partnership for Youth Empowerment (www.pyeglobal.org), offers a dynamic, Arts-based youth empowerment camp for teens aged 14-18!  Led by a resident Power of Hope facilitator (www.powerofhope.org), youth from all over will gather to “explore their creativity, learn from diversity, express themselves and connect with others in a positive, supportive community.”

CONTACT nathan@artmonastery.org for more details!

From the morning of June 14 through the evening of June 24, youth will take part in workshops in writing, theater, gardening, music, cooking, dance, meditation, chant….and much more.   Workshops will be in English, with some Italian translation available, and will be led by the Art Monastery’s own Artists in Residence, as well as the youth themselves!

In addition to workshops, the kids will take part in Italian/American language and cultural exchanges with participating Italian youth, as well as experiential fieldtrips focusing on art, dance, music, history, Italian food, sustainable agriculture, and FUN!  (One of last year’s outings culminated in an impromptu dance performance amidst 2000 year old Italian ruins, a truly special experience!)

“You’ll discover you have more skill, talent and spirit than you ever imagined!  You’ll get to explore your creativity with an amazing team of artists, writers, actors, musicians and dancers who can show you how to use the arts to unleash your power.  You’ll learn from youth and adult activists and community leaders who are dedicated to make a difference in the world…We believe that as a young person, your voice and energy is needed to help build a world that works for everybody. “ – Power of Hope

Guiding Principles (from pyeglobal.org)

• Young people are our most vital resource for building a positive, sustainable future.
• Youth are far more creative, compassionate and capable than many adults and the mass media believe.
• The expressive arts provide potent tools for youth to find their voices and build connections across cultures and generations.
• Youth thrive in the company of adults who live passionate, engaged lives.
• Adults find renewed optimism and creativity when they participate in learning environments where young people blossom.
• Identifying and training social artists to be skilled conveners of intergenerational, multicultural learning events is a powerful lever for social change.
