What you'll walk away with
Here's everything you’ll learn
In Empowering the Inner Artist, trainings are released in weekly modules inside a private, members-only portal. We meet for live workshops every Saturday and supplement the experience with the opportunity for personal feedback at co-working / office hour sessions.
One-time-only heavily discounted Pilot Pricing is currently available, with "Pay What You Wish" options available for BIPOC participants.
A New Beginning: Gather Your Materials & Start to Explore
We'll get started by gathering your materials! Before we formally begin, you'll get some advice on what's needed. If you'd like to keep your drawing kit simple, you really only need a few pencils, some paper and a couple of erasers.
Planting Seeds: Foundational Practices for Nurturing Your Creative Life
In the first week we set the stage for establishing a meditation practice, connecting with your intuitive voice, and getting to know your materials through guided, easeful experimentation. We're planting the seeds to grow a creative practice that embraces curiosity and play.
Sketch Your Way to the Present Moment
Taking the time to draw what inspires you is an opportunity to be radically present with yourself and the world around you. It can be a conduit for finding joy in the simple things. You'll learn how to capture a sense of life, movement and energy in your work and how to start a drawing using simple geometric shapes, all while engaging a meditative state of mind.
Learning to See: The Block-in
Historically, learning to draw was called “learning how to see”. Isn't that cool? Drawing offers us the incredible opportunity to become more intimate with our surroundings, to literally see the world around us more clearly and in more detail. In this module, you'll learn to accurately assess shapes, proportions and values and translate them to the page using classical drawing techniques.
Creativity as a Place of Play: Letting the Inner Critic Take a Rest
In this session we will explore how to stop judging ourselves, how to shake off the shackles of perfectionism, and let go of worrying about what other people think of what we make. You’ll discover:
- Inner Critic & Imposter Quiz Show
- The 5 types of creative blocks
- How to tango with your Inner Critic
- 6 Strategies for cutting through Imposter Syndrome
- Practical tools you can use when you're blocked
- Guided R.A.I.N. meditation
- Guided Artmonk Practice to disrupt the inner critic
The Power of Line
Sometimes we can really crunch down in our creative practices and the joy of doing it evaporates. In this module, we will look at why that happens and how to disrupt it. You will discover:
- The power of play in the creative life
- The impact of lack of play
- The scientifically proven benefits of play
- Cultivating rest & play
- Creating opportunities to play
- Creative practice: Permission to make a mess
- Contemplative practice: Ingredients for joy & meaning
The Interplay of Light and Form
The way we see the world is inherently shaped by light and the absence of light. In this module you'll learn how to push your realism skills further by accurately portraying light and shadow. The way dark and light are portrayed in a drawing has an enormous effect on the emotional impact of your work. We'll explore how the depiction of light influences the viewer and how this can be used in your drawings.
Merging Terrain: How Intuition and Skill Inform Each Other
Why teach a course on intuition and skill? Aren’t these two completely different things? We don’t think so. In this module Suiko and Meg will talk about how intuition and skill influence one another and how this has been important in their artistic lives. Looking at students' drawing journals, we'll talk about how to bridge the gap between drawing “exercises” and personal expression.
Placing the Pieces: A Study on Composition
Composition is perhaps the most important — and often overlooked — aspect of visual art. You'll learn to look at shape, value and line and understand how even small changes can influence the emotional impact of your work. You’ll explore how to guide the viewer’s eye through your drawing by establishing a hierarchy of focal points, and how to quickly experiment with different compositions so that you’re confident with your plan before committing to a time consuming piece of work.
When we reach Module 9, you'll be deep into creating a final project. This class is devoted to talking about the ups and downs of the process and getting feedback and encouragement as we work on bringing our creations to life. Part of what makes drawing fun is that it's challenging — the specific challenges may change, but there'll be puzzles to solve in your first year of drawing and in your 30th year (I can personally attest to that!). Sharing work as a group is SO helpful — we'll learn from one another’s questions and experiences. At this stage, it's particularly helpful to cheer each other on and to know that we’re not alone.
Before the Harvest: Tending to Your Growing Creation
Sharing the Bounty: Celebration & Art Share
In our final week, we gather to reflect on the ups and downs of the journey we've been on together. We’ll share our work. Don’t worry if you don’t feel “finished” — it’s okay! If you take one thing away from this course, we hope it's that you've found joy in the process. This course is a journey that we’ll go on as a community and that deserves a celebration. :)
How does the course work?
Each session focuses on a key theme to help you stay engaged and inspired. You'll learn fundamental drawing skills with a focus on discovering how these skills may be useful in developing your unique artistic voice. We’ll also explore topics like silencing the inner critic, tapping into creative flow, and building a practice that nourishes your soul.
We meet weekly for live teaching workshops where we explore new tools, techniques, and expressions. Each call includes a grounding meditation, a presentation, time to practice the new skill, and space for questions and reflections.
This is your weekly opportunity to get instructor feedback on work, ask questions or simply show up to chat while we all work on our own projects. Co-working can really help get the motivation and energy up, and we can all learn from each other’s questions! If you are ready to create with more joy, ease, and bad ass skill, this is your invitation to begin.

Meet Your Guides: Megan Saunders
I’m an artist based out of Nashville, TN. For the past few years my work has focused on the human form. In particular I aim to express the delicate strength and beauty that characterizes the human condition.
I've been a scientific illustrator for many years and my work has been featured in numerous journals as well as in teaching materials used at Duke University and the University of Toronto, from which I hold graduate degrees. My fine art paintings and drawings have been shown in galleries across the US.
I’m a certified meditation teacher with Suffering & Delight, a nonprofit that helps people with chronic pain and illness, and have been a Zen practitioner for over 20 years — first studying with a branch of Thich Naht Hahn’s Plum Village Sangha, and currently with Hobu Beata Chapman in No Walls Sangha.
I have had the pleasure of teaching art for almost 3 decades and I consider it an enormous privilege to help students find their unique creative voice while learning to ride the waves of the artistic process along the way.

...and Suiko McCall

I’m the Founder and Abbess of the Art Monastery, an international arts organization dedicated to personal awakening and cultural transformation through creativity, spiritual practice, and community.
I’ve authored two books and two workbooks, now available in 14 languages, and hold degrees from Yale and the San Francisco Art Institute. My large-scale paintings have been exhibited worldwide, from San Francisco to Rome. Certified as an International Transformation Host, Morning Altars teacher, and Mindfulness Meditation teacher, I spent four years in residence at Green Dragon Zen Temple. My spiritual practice blends Zen, shamanism, and intuitive exploration.
For nearly 2 decades, I’ve helped artists and non-artists alike embrace their creativity. It’s my passion, and I’d love to support you on your journey.
